Important Definitions

Key Definitions: 

Awareness is the ability to directly know and perceive, to feel, or to be cognizant of events. More broadly, it is the state of being conscious of something. Another definition describes it as a state wherein a subject is aware of some information when that information is directly available to bring to bear in the direction of a wide range of behavioral options. The concept is often synonymous to consciousness and is also understood as being consciousness itself.

Defense is the ability/means or method of defending or protecting oneself. 

Physical Threat having the means or a dangerous weapon in one’s possession and either threatening with or using the weapon or committing assault.

Baseline  is a fixed point of reference that is used for comparison purposes. 

Limbic System ThWhenever you perceive a threat, imminent or imagined, your limbic system immediately responds via your autonomic nervous system – the complex network of endocrine glands that automatically regulates metabolism. The brain is organized into three basic and highly interrelated parts and functions. The brain stem and hypothalamus monitor regulation of one’s internal environment and the fight and flight

mechanisms primary area of the brain that deals with stress is the limbic system. 

Kinesics is the interpretation of body motion communication such as facial expressions and gestures, nonverbal behavior related to movement of any part of the body or the body as a whole. The equivalent popular culture term is body language.

Biometric Cues term is used to describe the uncontrollable and automatic biological responses the human body to stress. The physiological responses are key to understanding emotional states and changes. 

Iconography allows us to understand the symbols people use to communicate their beliefs and affiliations. 

Atmospherics The collective attitudes, moods, behaviors in a given situation or place. The social or emotional atmosphere of an environment. 

Dangerous Personalities  A dangerous person can be thought of as a person that is a threat, or can be someone that tries to act dangerous.  Recognition of dangerous personalities such as the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid, and the Unstable Personality.
